Did you know that weather-related events cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries a year? Did you also know that 70% of power outages in the US are weather related, from events such as ice, wind, snow, lightning, and even dust (a big cause of power outages in Arizona). Did you know that nine million children a year suffer from non-fatal injuries, and that accidents are the leading cause of death in children? Many of those accidents are caused by severe weather events, such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Here in Arizona, we have forest fire disasters. The Center for Disease Control recommends having a kit available for any emergency that may arise. They recommend the kit include water, food, flashlights, medication, a first aid kit, extra batteries, sanitation and personal hygiene items, as well as copies of personal documents and other necessities.
This months Champions for Kids simple service project, Energizer Light Up A Life, is a great way to give to children in your community, by putting together care kits for children and families, to use in an emergency. It makes perfect sense that Energizer would be sponsoring this project-that little bunny has been lighting the way and keeping us charged up for years! I have mentioned in previous posts how easy it is to do a Champions For Kids simple service project, and this project couldn't be easier! A care kit with water, flashlight, sunscreen, hand wipes, food, and other necessities will be so much fun to put together!
Have you (yes, I am talking to you) done a Champions for Kids project yet? No? Come on...what are you waiting for?!
Here are some ways you can help!
- GATHER your friends, family, and co-workers to help children stay safe and be prepared, by putting together Care Kits for kids! Include items like band-aids, hand wipes, tissues, flashlights, extra batteries, and bottled water. This would make a great project for your scout or religious education group!
- LEARN about the safety and health needs of children in your community by asking a teacher, social worker, or other community representative to speak to your group.
- GIVE the Care Kits to a school, religious organization, shelter, or other community organization that helps children in your community.
- REPORT back to www.championsforkids.org/simple so that we can celebrate your participation! How many people participated in the Energizer Light Up A Life project and became Champions for Kids? We want to know that you were part of the vision of mobilizing 20 Million people by 2020 to become Champions for Kids! Also come back here and tell me what you put in your kit!
Join me...let this be the month you participate in a Champions For Kids Simple Service project....then come back here and see, in my next Champions for Kids post, what I purchased, and tell me what you put in your kits!
